Rob grew up in Cape Town, spending his early years running around on the slopes of Devil's Peak before going to boarding school in Queenstown (Eastern Cape). In Queenstown the school was very lenient (in those days), allowing the boarders out onto the mountains unsupervised. Consequently he spent many weekends exploring the hills surrounding the town, occasionally getting into trouble and in the process learning to anticipate, avoid and solve problems.In the 1980's South Africa still had compulsory military service for school leavers, giving Rob the opportunity to appreciate all that military life had to offer but sadly keeping him out of the mountains for a few years. After National Service he joined the army for a brief further stint before opting for civilian life.
Qualifications:
- MDT Rock Climbing Instructor (includes Rock Climbing Leader, which is UIAA recognised)
- MDT Mountain Walking Instructor (includes Mountain Walking Leader, which is UIAA recognised)
- Conduct a guided single-pitch abseiling experience < 60m (SAQA 9283)
- Conduct a guided single-pitch abseiling experience 60 - 150m (SAQA 9282)
- Provide a guided single pitch rock climbing experience (SAQA 9285)
- Plan and provide a guided rock climbing experience (SAQA 9286)
- Plan and provide a guided canyoneering experience (SAQA 9287)
- Plan and conduct a guided mountain walking experience (SAQA 9288)
- Plan and conduct a guided mountaineering experience (SAQA 9289)
- Registered with SA Dept of Environmental Affairs and Tourism as an Adventure Guide (Mountaineering)
- Registered with Health Professions Council of SA as a Basic Ambulance Attendant
