TRIP DESCRIPTION
The Magaliesberg rock is ideally suited to climbing. This stuff is extremely hard and provides good protection, too. Of all the routes in Tonquani Kloof, Hawk's Eye (13, *****) must count as the most well known classic of the lot. It's a lovely route with a stunning crux move which passes either through or around an eye-hole formed by a block supporting an overhang.
We'll start off with a warm up route - probably something like Left Corner or Kitchen Corner just to get everyone thinking along the same lines before tackling Hawk's.
The climb is 3 pitches (rope-lengths) of very easy grade climbing and can be done easily in hiking boots or running shoes.
We will provide all technical equipment, which includes:
- Harness
- Helmet
- Ropes
- Technical climbing equipment
Costs are inclusive of permits and lunch. However, permits can only be booked dring week-day mornings, so please give adequate warning. This is a GREAT trip for those who find themselves in or near Gauteng (Johannesburg / Pretoria) or staying at Sun City and have a day to spare. If you've planned your holiday and find that you have one day to spare then consider this as a time-filler.
Winter and spring are the best seasons for climbing in the Magaliesberg - summer gets exceedingly hot and is often plagued by exceedingly violent summer thunderstorms, making afternoon climbing quite exciting in a less-than-pleasant sense.
